Authorities: Beware of scam offering grants, tax rebates | Crime
Authorities would like to warn citizens about a current calling scam offering grants and rebates.
Officials say scammers are calling phones using number 233-333-3333 with thick accents (possibly Caribbean) stating they are from the federal government in Washington, DC and are offering grants in varying amounts.
According to officials, the callers often bait the victims by saying they are getting a tax refund, and that they want personal information and a Visa number.
If allowed to go further in the conversation, the scammers will also request that you send in money.
Authorities say this is a scam, and do not give any personal information out.
The best way to handle these callers is to hang up, authorities say.
