DHEC confirms animal rabies case
News

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, SC (WIS) - Officials with the Department of Health and Environmental Control have recommended rabies treatment for a Fairfield County couple.

DHEC says they found two bats inside the couple's home and one of those bats tested positive for the disease.

While this is the first confirmed rabid animal of 2012 in Fairfield
County, two rabid animals were confirmed in that county in 2011.

So far this year, 33 animal cases have been confirmed by DHEC.

Only one human case of rabies has been confirmed in the state in the past 50 years. That case was a Sumter County woman back in December of 2011.
