Distracted driving is a major safety risk on South Carolina roads and text messaging is by far the most alarming distraction. That is why local SUBWAY® restaurants have partnered with the South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) to urge drivers to wait to send text messages – or W8 2 TXT – until they have stopped driving.

Gas prices fall about 4 cents a gallon

 

Average retail gasoline prices in Columbia have fallen 4.4 cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $3.52/g yesterday, according to GasBuddy's daily survey of 350 gas outlets in Columbia. This compares with the national average that has fallen 3.2 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.66/g, according to gasoline price website GasBuddy.com.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of two people being killed on South Carolina highways from Friday, March 8, at 6 p.m. until Sunday, March 10, at midnight.

As of March 13, 116 people have died on South Carolina highways, compared to 147 highway deaths in this same time period in 2012.

MADD Urges South Carolina Senate to Advance Emma’s Law

 

Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) urges Senators to advance Emma’s Law, S 137, requiring all repeat and first-time offenders with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .12 or higher to use an ignition interlock on their vehicle for at least six months. The law is named after six year-old Emma Longstreet who was killed by a drunk driver on January 1, 2012.

SC gas prices climb 14 cents in past month

Gas prices in South Carolina jumped 14 cents in the past month, up from $3.21 to $3.35 per gallon, according to AAA Carolinas, but still remain 6 cents below last year's average of $3.41.

After falling throughout the autumn months, gas prices in South Carolina hit a low of $3.02 on Dec. 20, 2012, and slowly rose until mid-January when they began to increase rapidly.

Prices should remain within pennies of today's prices for the upcoming three-day Presidents Day weekend, with many companies giving employees Monday off.
