SC schools to conduct earthquake safety drills

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina schools will conduct earthquake safety drills as part of a larger effort to make residents aware of the potential dangers of tremors.

September is National Preparedness Month

September is National Preparedness Month, and in an effort to remind people that preparedness starts at the local level, the South Carolina Emergency Management Division is promoting programs and plans that may prove useful in times of emergency.

During the month, families, schools and businesses should review emergency plans, the contents of their emergency supply kits and consider conducting disaster drills so everyone will know what to do during an emergency and how their emergency plan works.

The American Red Cross, Columbia Region is hosting disaster training classes at 2751 Bull Street, Columbia, SC 29201 in preparation of Hurricane Irene making landfall on the East Coast this weekend.

The C-D-C recommends that you check on the seniors regularly.

They say everyone especially the elderly should keep a lot of fluids in their system.

Also, they recommend that everyone finds a cool place and that older adults stay inside in an air conditioned room or something well ventilated with a fan.
